Energy Management – ISO 50001
On the basis of the Energy Services Act (EDL-G), large companies were obliged to conduct energy audits for the first time in 2015. The valid standard for energy audits is DIN EN 16247, which can be carried out by internal or external experts. The alternative is that affected companies can also introduce an energy management system according to ISO 50001 or an environmental management system according to EMAS (Eco-Management and Auditing Scheme).
The establishment and operation of an energy management system according to ISO 50001 is basically possible and reasonable for every company, if the amount of energy consumed, exceeds a given volume. As an internationally valid standard, DIN ISO 50001:2018 has replaced the previous version DIN EN ISO 50001:2011 as of February 2020.
The aim of energy management according to ISO 50001 is to assess the energy efficiency of a company in terms of
- energy use,
- energy sources and
- energy expenditure.
This results in advantages for the company/organization. These are for example:
- detailed transparency regarding energy consumption
- identification of savings potential
- achievement of improved efficiency through lower energy consumption
- higher efficiency through lower energy costs and thus competitive advantages
It is possible to introduce and operate an energy management system independently. However, there are synergy effects and advantages if energy management according to ISO 50001 is operated in an integrated management system together with other management systems, such as ISO 27001, ISO 14001 or ISO 9001.
