Occupational Health and Safety Assessment System – OHSAS 18001 / ISO 45001

Occupational Health and Safety in companies is becoming increasingly important because more and more companies are realizing that by implementing an Occupational Health and Safety Management System, on the one hand absenteeism due to illness and accidents can be reduced and on the other hand employee motivation can be increased by implementing safe and ergonomic workplaces. This also increases the legal security for the company and the image and customer confidence can be strengthened.

In terms of content, a holistic approach should be established, which takes into account prevention, dealing with potential hazards, appropriate protective measures and aspects relating to the health and well-being of employees.

For implementation, the procedure according to the requirements of national and international standards for occupational health and safety management is suitable.

Currently, the Occupational Health and Safety Management Standard OHSAS 18001 still applies, which regulates the minimum requirements for best practice in occupational safety management. This standard is to be replaced by the newer standard ISO 45001 by March 2021 in organizations / companies.

Both standards aim at the

  • identification of risks due to accidents or overloading of employees and
  • establishment of effective measures for the protection of the employees in order
  • prevention of disturbances and failures in the operating process in the best possible way
  • internal and external documentation as health protection and the welfare of employees is an important aspect of the corporate culture.

An Occupational Health and Safety Management System according to the requirements of ISO 45001 can be combined well in a target-oriented, cost-saving and comfortable way with other management systems, such as quality management according to ISO 9001 or environmental management according to ISO 14001 because of their similar structures.

As a result, costs can be saved, resources optimized and synergies used in the best possible manner.
